A strongly alkaline caustic used in manufacturing soap and paper and aluminum and various sodium compounds; SYN. caustic soda.
> Or caustic soda; NaOH the commonest alkali. The solid and the solution are corrosive. It is used to neutralize acids, in the manufacture of soap, and in oven cleaners. It is prepared industrially from sodium chloride by the electrolysis of concentrated brine.
